Tondu faced the Aberavon Green Stars in defence of their title as Ospreys Cup Winners. The Green Stars elected to play with the stiff breeze on this bright spring morning.

Both sides probed each others defences in the early stages and the Stars managed to keep the Junior Waterwheelers from mounting any meaningful attacks.

Play ebbed and flowed with both sides conceding a number of penalties but neither able to capitalise. With loose play near the halfway the Stars managed to engineer a gap in the Tondu defence. A footrace ensued and the Tondu captain Tom Owen was just unable to prevent a score under the posts. The conversion was successful.

South Coast International Festival of Rugby

Tondu swept to victory in England’s largest festival of rugby. They displayed too much passion, pace, commitment and skill for their opponents and came away deserved winners.

The first day league saw them defeat Battersea Ironsides by 10 tries to nil. Next they eased past the Devon and Cornwall champions from Newton Abbott by 3 unanswered tries. Finally, they made it a clean sweep by putting 7 past local side Gosport and Fareham.

On day two they powered past The Drifters of Farnham to face Hinckley in the semi final. Hinckley succumbed but managed to score once in reply to the Waterwheelers 6.

In the final Tondu faced last year’s winners, and Kent Champions, Cranbrook.

As in earlier games, Tondu played with a level of passion that their opponents could not match and ran out winners by 5 tries to nil.

Many thanks must be extended to our host Bognor Regis RFC for a well organised and friendly venue.

Thanks also to Denise Bradley for organising the trip and to the coaches who have brought the lads to their present high standard.

25th Feb 07 – Osprey Cup, Gorseinon away

Tondu captain Owen Thomas won the toss and elected to play with the breeze against last years Osprey Plate winners Gorseinon.

Clever use of the conditions by Lloyd Bradley immediately had Tondu pressing the home side’s line. An attempted clearance kick stalled in the wind and Andrew Waite set up Jordan Mathews for a try in the corner.

The Tondu lead was short lived as Gorseinon scored an interception try under the posts, allowing an easy conversion.

Confidence seeped into the home side and a period of ferocious toing and froing ensued between the opposing packs, honours being even. The deadlock was broken when Aled Pengilly stole possession in a maul and Gorseinon conceded a penalty on their line. Yet again the home side failed to clear the danger and Nathan Silverthorn went over out wide to retake the lead.

Bradley drilled the ball into the corners and yet again the clearance kick stalled allowing a counter that Tiger Lewis put over the whitewash.

The next kick off saw Tondu vary their tactics as the forwards drove from their own 22 to the opposition 22 before feeding out to Joseph Gatt who outpaced his opposite number to score.

Half time gave Tondu a lead of 20 to 7; but would this be enough playing into the wind?

Jagged nerves saw both sides fumbling their way back into the second half and the game really came to the boil when Gorseinon scored first and converted. They were now fired up and won a penalty on the Tondu line. Magnificent defence kept them out Tondu winning possession and the forwards grafted their way upfield. Tom Owen, returning from injury, tested his fitness with a break from his own half to score under the posts. Gareth Lindenburn converted.

This cushion was soon lost as Gorseinon stole the ball at a scrum; again scoring under the sticks and converting.

With the clock winding down the next try would be decisive. Tondu pressed hard on the Gorseinon line but were forced into touch. Kyle Davies capitalised on loose ball from the lineout and was over in a flash to secure the victory.

Tondu under 13s vs Waunarlwydd 18 Feb 07

Tondu captain Gareth Lindenburn led his men out for their first ever match at Waunarlwydd on a fine Spring-like morning.

The first ten minutes were tense, both sides probing each others defences but finding no way through. Tondu seemed out of sorts, perhaps due to lack of match practice recently.

First blood fell to Waun after Tondu had conceded a penalty in their own 22. Tondu halted the tap and go but the ball was fed blindside to the Waun wing who crashed through tackles to score. Paradoxically, this seemed to settle the away side and they pressed hard for the equaliser. Waun defended manfully and managed to hold their slender lead into half time.

The second half was one-sided with Andrew Waite, Tom Evans, and Rhys Williams making hard yards in midfield but unable to get over the whitewash. Twice the away fans thought the equaliser was theirs only to be disappointed. With time ebbing away Waun at last managed to break the Tondu stranglehold and clear to the safety of the Tondu half where the eked out the last minute of time.
