U11 Div 1 Piranhas 1-3 Rope and Anchor

An absolutely awful day to be outside never mind play football and not surprisingly it was touch and go if the game would actually start with some surface water and the pitch very muddy. Credit to both sides- they agreed that they might as well give it a go and while the game was never a classic, there was no shortage of endeavour on display. Rope had the first real attempt on goal with Regan Foy being denied only by a superb one handed save by the home keeper. After that escape, Piranhas swept downfield and only a lst gasp clearance off the line by Matthew Kennedy kept the scoreline blank. Rope took the lead thanks to good work by Keenan Quansah as he turned smartly after receiving the ball from a throw and put in a superb cross for Regan Foy to volley home like a rocket. Lots more battling but no goalmouth incident in the first half. HT 0-1 The second saw Rope extend their lead as defender Matthew Kennedy picked the ball up on the halfway line and made his way forward. As Piranhas finally sent a man to close him down he was 25 yards out and let fly- his shot landing in front of the keeper and flying up off the surface water and into the net. A huge slice of luck for the Rope. 0-2. It was nearly 3 as Cameron Geering flew into a tackle and was first to get his head to the ball as it spun up- his header just going inches wide. Piranhas still threatened on the break and only a great one handed save from Callum Spencer denied their striker when clean through. Although Rope had a lot of the ball the game was right back in the balance as a quick break left Ropes centre defenders trailing and a good finish to the side of the keeper made it 1-2. Last goal of the game went to Rope as Tom Corless flew down the wing and put in a great cross to Callum 'Woodsey' Woods at the back of the box. He unleashed a screamer right across the goal and into the far corner- the keeper given no chance. FT 1-3. We would all have rather been inside today but it is to the great credit of all the players that we had a game to watch. Rope deserved their win today- they simply had much more of the ball and in better conditions they would have expected to have won more comfortably. Piranhas will be disappointed to have put is so much effort for no points. Steve Kennedy
