U10s Div 1 Penlake 1-1 Rope

The top 2 sides in the league met on Saturday in a rehearsal for the cup final in 2 weeks time. Penlake started slightly the brighter with more of the ball and pushing forward towards Rope's goal. They had the first real chance with a well hit shot from long distance which the Rope keeper saved above his head. Rope got into their stride and another long range effort from Nial Ford resulted in a comfortable save by the keeper. Both sides had half chances but defences held strong. Rope had a couple of free kicks which went just over and Penlake fired over after a good shot on the turn. With half time approaching Penlake attacked and a tame effort went under the Rope keeper before being cleared, the ball being returned from the right and bundled hone from close in. A scruffy goal but they all count and reward for Penlake pushing men forward. HT 1-0 The second half followed much the same pattern- Rope having more than their fair share of possesion but chances at a premium. A Rope throw in into a crowded box saw David control and shoot on the turn- his shot just too strong for the Penlake keeper 1-1. Lots more tackling- some real crunchers for a game that was being played for pride only with league positions already secured and loads of effort and running from both sides. One really smart move by Rope saw 1-2s played the length of the pitch only for the final shot to be blocked. The game finished with Penlake on the attack- Rope defender Matthew Kennedy clearly injured but not going down- the ref having no choice but to allow the game to carry on. With a 3 on 1 advantage - Regan Foy came flying back to put in a superb tackle and clearance. FT 1-1. 2 great performances from the champions and runners up and on the day nothing to seperate them. Penlake have deservedly won the league for putting in performances like this every week but Rope have showed that on their day they can still match the best... It's going to be a great cup final.
