Aux.Cup.Rd 1. Fife 0 - 5 Newton FC.
Newton Knock Fife for Five!
With Newton goals being about as rare as Icebergs floating down the Mersey, we were treated to a near ‘white-out’ as Fife were hit by a veritable avalanche of them!
Once again the game started in bright sunshine which is a real bonus for late February, but the opening exchanges struggled to match the conditions.
This game was a potential ‘banana skin’for the visitors when their poor scoring record of late was taken into account. However, it soon became apparent that Fife were more than content to play a defensive role by stringing five at the back and seldom pushing forward.
The game badly needed a goal, but on 15 mins it was certainly worth the wait! Latching onto a ball on the edge of the area one of Newton’s front runners suddenly turned and unleashed a cracker of a shot that screamed into the top corner of Fife’s net! Perhaps Fife knew something that we didn’t as they continued to play their dogged defensive pattern to keep any more shots like that one to a premium.
Fife’s keeper than made a blunder as Newton’s other striker bore down on him.The ball somehow squirmed between his legs and the striker pounced to notch goal No.2 only minutes from the interval.
At 2-0 at halftime, Newton could have been forgiven for thinking that the game was won, especially as Fife were offering very little in attack. The visitors maintained their more positive approach and 6mins into the half we were treated to another outstanding individual goal!
Newton’s speedy substitute tore onto a through pass, controlled with one touch and let fly with another belter that shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
A really great strike this one and with it effectively settling the outcome of the match, at 3-0 the game settled down again to a luke warm affair.
So much so, that another 10 mins drifted by before Newton managed a fourth goal.
This time there was more of a hint of teamwork involved as the ball was worked (quite slowly) through the middle of the park. The passing just about unlocked the home defence for Newton’s striker to notch a deserved second goal.
The icing was put on the cake with only minutes remaining and Fife failing to clear their lines, Newton’s striker produced the visitors’ first hat-trick of the season as he blasted his shot over the keeper with near unstoppable power that nearly burst the top corner of the net!
At 5-0 ,Newton had started their cup campaign in some style with some great individual goals. It is to be hoped that some of this can now be translated into their league campaign!
